Athenas Reclaim Women’s Golf Championship, Headed to NCAAs

CMS concluded the three-day competition with a tournament-low 283 to win by 11 strokes over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The University of Redlands placed third, followed by California Lutheran University in fourth, Occidental College in fifth, Chapman University and the University of La Verne. The Athenas held three-shot edges over the Bulldogs on the tough Par 3s and Sagehens on the Par 5s but really separated with a 16-stroke advantage over the Sagehens on Par 4s.

Christine Yu (CMS) and rookie Annabelle Chan of Pomona-Pitzer tied for the individual title at -6, finishing a whopping five strokes ahead of third place. Yu's career-best 67 to open the tournament and three-under final round proved enough to match Chan's consistency with all three rounds between -1 and -3. After a bogey-free first round, Chan overcame a pair of bogeys to open the final round and four total with a pair of eagles on holes nine and 18. Felllow Athena Esther Lee and Sagehen Eunice Yi tied for third as the only other players under par at -1, with Alisa Ching (+2) rounding out the top five.

While the Athenas have earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be hosted by CMS at Desert Willow in Palm Desert, the Sagehens (fifth) and Bulldogs (11th) will hope to earn at-large or individual bids.
