Leading Redlands to a 2026 Regular Season Championship, Zachary Darmanyan and Bo Robertson of the Bulldogs have been named the SCIAC's Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Year, respectively.
It marks the second time in three years that Redlands has swept the Athlete of the Year Awards, as the pair joins Phillip Kostenko and Owen Jamieson in 2024 to have achieved this feat.
In 12 conference matches, Darmanyan was the lone player in the league to have registered double-digit goals with 10. The senior midfielder found the back of the net against all but four conference opponents and tallied braces against Cal Lutheran and Occidental. His two assists pushed his points total up to 22, which also led the SCIAC. Three of his goals proved to be game-winners, including the only score in both meetings against La Verne.
Darmanyan's defensive counterpart Robertson helped solidify one of the best backline's in the conference, as the Bulldogs allowed a league-best six goals in SCIAC play. Redlands recorded eight shutouts in its 12 conference matchups and Robertson started each one with a total of 1,071 minutes played. In a draw against Chapman, the Bulldogs did not allow a single shot on goal, which was the second time on the season the team had done so.
A first-year out of San Francisco, Calif., Samir Bouhamama of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year following his impressive season in the midfield. Making eight starts out of nine appearances in conference play, he collected a goal and an assist to end the regular season.
Diego Cavalie of Occidental was presented with the Award of Distinction following a tremendous display of character during the year. The award of distinction recognizes a senior SCIAC soccer athlete for exemplary achievements through their higher education experience. Now in his fourth season, Cavalie's leadership extends beyond the pitch, as the senior captain is a member of both the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Commitee and the Student-Athlete Advisory Commitee. He also volunteers at Huntington Hospital and has dedicated more than 500 hours to teaching and coaching children through KANTAYA, a nonprofit serving underserved communities in Ventanilla, Peru.
Led by a first-year head coach, Alex Ortega along with his staff were named the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The team's top finish in the standings marked the third consecutive season in which the Bulldogs claimed at least a share of the regular season title. With an 8-1-3 record in conference play, Redlands ranked at the top of nearly every category in the SCIAC, including goals scored, goals allowed, and margin of victory.
Across both the First and Second Team All-SCIAC, Redlands totaled eight players with four on each team. The Stags came in with five, while La Verne and Whittier were tabbed for four players each. Pomona-Pitzer, California Lutheran, and Occidental all landed one selection on each team, and Chapman and Caltech rounded out the squads with a combined two players on the first team.
The postseason continues with semi-final matchups set between #2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and #3 La Verne, as well as #1 Redlands and #5 Whittier. Both matches will be played at 7 p.m. tonight.
