No. 5 Whittier has advanced to the SCIAC Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal following a win in penalty kicks over No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer in the opening round on Tuesday, November 3, in Claremont, Calif.
After the Sagehens broke the ice inside of the first six minutes, the Poets answered right back with a goal in the 17th minute. The two teams then remained scoreless for the remainder of the opening half and late into the second frame.
With just over 16 minutes remaining in regulation, Jamie Eijpen of Whittier was able to score following a corner attempt to put the team in front. However, the Poets were unable to hang on to their edge, as Pomona-Pitzer equalized in the 84th minute on a goal by Charles Leonard.
Neither side found the back of the net in the 20-minute overtime period, which shifted the game to penalty kicks. Both teams made their initial attempts before the Sagehens' second shot sailed high of the frame. The Poets went on to convert each of their next four attempts to clinch the match.
Whittier will now face No. 1 Redlands on Thursday, November 5, at 7 p.m.
