Bulldogs Crowned Tournament Champions, Extend Win Streak to 28

Top-seeded University of Redlands Bulldogs defended their home field even playing as the visitors in an 11-2 (5) win over Whittier College to reclaim the SCIAC Softball Tournament crown while extending their program-record win streak to 28 games.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the top of the first inning and stretched out to a four-run lead on a series of singles following a sacrifice bunt in the second. The Poets began to chip away beginning in the bottom stanza, with Gaby Hernandez smashing an RBI double to centerfield and Daniella Contreras scoring on a passed ball in the third. Whittier kept the momentum going despite a pitching change, loading the bases with one out and sending a hard-hit ball to right field but Leila Gomez sprinted to the line for the catch and gunned down the tagging runner at home to keep the Bulldogs in front.

Redlands stretched the lead by one in the top of the fourth before the bats kicked fully into gear, plating six and closing out the game early via run-rule. The entire Bulldogs starting lineup recorded a hit on the day, with Tournament Most Outstanding Athlete Katlyn Gandara driving home the conclusive two to cap the feat. Last year's postseason star Avery Provenzano came through in a big game yet again with a 2-for-2 line with a double, walk, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base from the eighth spot in the order. Rookie Caitlyn Griffith relieved Brianna Garcia to earn the win, striking out three without surrendering a hit in 2.2 innings pitched.
