The Stags trio of
Samson Li,
Jamison Tan and
Sebi Aliaga tied for fourth at two-under to put the Stags eight strokes ahead of Occidental College, which received one of the three joint-lowest rounds of the day from
Amaan Kanji as the first Tiger into the clubhouse at a five-under 66. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges sit one stroke back in third place after
Ken Cremers also shot a 66. California Lutheran University trails the Sagehens by one after
Jackson Stitt turned in the only other below-par round in the field and are just one stroke ahead of the University of Redlands, for whom
Jay Alvarado Wing also carded a 66. Chapman University and the University of La Verne round out the standings.
All three of the low rounds did the majority of their damage on the front nine despite the Santa Anita course playing about even for the full field, with Kanji on pace for a career round before fighting through two bogeys on the final three holes. Wing opened the round with an eagle for a -5 front nine and Cremers strung together five birdies across the turn. CMS was the only team to play below-par on the Par 4s for a three-stroke advantage over Redlands and eight over the third-ranked team. Everyone attacked the Par 5s with five squads playing below-par and Oxy leading the pack at -9 for a two-shot edge over CMS.
Tomorrow’s second round will begin at 9 a.m. with the men’s teams teeing off first.
