Kan Claims National Title for CMS, Pomona-Pitzer Moves to Seventh on Day Two of NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

Madeleine Kan of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges won the individual national title in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the Athenas in a charge up the standings on the second day of the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

The Athenas are tied for 10th with 73 points, trailing Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in seventh place on 91 points still just 11 shy of the top five.
 
Nina Aballea was the next-highest finisher in the SCIAC at fifth place in the 200 Free, a race where rookie Ellie Burkhardt also placed eighth after qualifying in third during the morning preliminaries. Fellow Sagehens Bennett Jones and Chesna Pelka placed 10th and 16th in the 400 IM and 200 Free, respectively. Kan’s teammates Sun Young Byun and Mackenzie Mayfield also finished in sixth and 12th, respectively, in the 100 Fly. The 200 Free Relay team of Francesca Coppo, Sabrina Wang, Burkhardt and Pelka capped the night with a fourth-place finish less than half a second shy of a medal.
