University of La Verne defender Joshua “Mickey” McCown has quickly become a cornerstone of the Leopards’ men’s soccer program, earning praise for his consistency, leadership, and ability to change the game from the backline.

A Business Administration major, McCown transferred from Santa Monica College, where he was named Defensive MVP during the 2023–24 season. At La Verne, he has emerged not only as a defensive standout but also as a steadying presence for a roster that welcomed 17 new players this year.

“Josh, better known to us as Mickey, has been arguably our most consistent player all season and an absolute joy to coach,” said Head Coach Drew Rea. “I’ve known of Mickey for about two years, dating back to my time coaching in the junior college ranks. Even then, I didn’t fully realize just how good he was. Now, having worked with him closely, it’s clear he is a natural defender with the potential to take his game to the next level.”

Rea praised McCown’s unique skill set, noting both his defensive dominance and his ability to spark the attack. “Mickey glides across the field with ease, stepping in to win tackles and shutting down attackers before they gain momentum. Very few players are able to get past him with pace, and his ability to drive forward with the ball not only relieves pressure but also jumpstarts our attack. His vision, passing range, and soccer IQ allow him to transition defense into offense seamlessly.”

Beyond his technical and tactical qualities, McCown’s leadership has stood out. “His presence on the field steadies those around him, and his teammates clearly respect him,” Rea continued. “With so many new faces this season, building chemistry was not an easy task, yet Mickey has been instrumental in creating bonds quickly. His genuine care for his teammates, both on and off the field, makes him not just a strong defender, but an outstanding teammate and leader.”

McCown, who has played soccer since the age of six, comes from a family with deep athletic roots. His father, John McCown, played minor league baseball for the Angels in the 1970s. For Mickey, the decision to join the Leopards was as much about academics and culture as it was about soccer. “I chose to attend La Verne because of the outstanding business program offered and the welcoming family-like environment,” he said.

With his combination of defensive talent, leadership, and determination, McCown has quickly established himself as one of the top players to watch in the conference this season.
