New SCIAC record holder
Valerie Mello of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and undisputed diving champion
Izzy Doud of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges were named the SCIAC Athlete and Diver of the Year at the 2025 Swimming & Diving Championship.
Mello won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle individual events and three relays along with runner-up finish in the 50 Free and a fourth relay to reach the podium in the maximum seven events for champion Pomona-Pitzer. The senior's highlight of the meet undoubtedly was breaking former teammate
Alex Turvey's conference record in the 200 Free, sneaking under the 1:50 barrier to clock a 1:49.78. Mello also played a role in setting two relay meet records in the 200 Free (1:32.05) and 400 Free (3:21.54) Relays.
Doud claimed victory on both diving boards, including a narrow two-point win on the 3-meter despite registering a failed dive late in the program. Returning from studying abroad last spring, the senior defeated last year's 3m champion with a score of 430.85 and fronted a CMS sweep of the 1m board with the only score above 400 at 406.55.
Another meet record-setter,
Izzy Yoon, was named Newcomer of the Year after claiming the 100/200 Back double including setting the new mark in the 200 Back at 2:00.61. The rookie also contributed on the Sagehens' champion 400 Medley Relay and runner-up 200 Medley Relay.
Whittier College's
Piper Guinn earned the Character Award, presented to a senior who best exemplifies success in the pool, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. Guinn has served on numerous leadership development projects including Model United Nations of the Far West, Student-Athlete Leadership Assembly, News Editor for the
Quaker Campus and Pi Sigma Alpha President. Guinn also is an environmental justice fellow and five-time Dean's List qualifier.
JP Gowdy and the Sagehens were recognized with the Coaching Staff of the Year award after leading Pomona-Pitzer to a 165.5-point victory and the first repeat women's title since 2018-19. The team combined for 12 event titles and 30 All-SCIAC swims, including five podium sweeps and five meet records.
Mello and
Mackenzie Mayfield of CMS shared the distinction of earning All-SCIAC honors in the maximum seven events, with Mayfield also setting a meet record in the 200 Fly (2:01.30) and matching Mello on two individual and one relay title to go with one runner-up individual and three relay finishes.
Katy Shaw (CMS) secured a sixth career individual title and eighth All-SCIAC swim with wins in the 500 and 1650 Free, while Mayfield is the active career All-SCIAC leader as a junior with seven individual and 19 total selections of a possible 21. Classmates
Sun Young Byun and
Annika Sharma earned another seven combined All-SCIAC appearances to total 13 and 12. Sagehen
Francesca Coppo was one of five swimmers to medal in all three individual events, also setting a meet record with a 22.84 in the 50 Free, and earned an addition three All-SCIAC nods on relays for a two-year career total of 11. Teammates
Emmie Appl and
Graeleigh Jones also reached the podium in all three individual events, bringing their individual career totals to seven and four, respectively. California Lutheran University NCAA qualifier
Madi Bodhidatta and CMS's
Madeleine Kan, both juniors, joined the five-time All-SCIAC club, with Bodhidatta spot on five and Kan reaching seven all on relays. Chapman University duo
Kiana Tanizaki-Hudson and
Avery Hall also cleared the five-time threshold, as Tanizaki-Hudson retires with four individual and five relay picks to Hall's seven relay qualifications.
