Men’s Water Polo Tournament: Unbeaten Sagehens Lock in Top Seed, Stags Stand Above Others, Oxy Hosts on Tiebreaker Over Whittier

The 2025 SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Tournament will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. with the First Round matchup between #4 seed Occidental College and #5 Whittier College, the winner of which will face #1 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges while #2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges host #3 University of Redlands on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The top-seeded Sagehens ran the table in conference play during the regular season with a key 10-9 victory coming at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Oct. 29. Rookie Jaden Winters quickly burst onto the scene with a team-leading 53 points on 35 goals and 18 assists along with 30 from Zach Whitfield, 26 from Jake Lee and another 24 from Darragh Flanders. Goalkeeper Greg Moore posted a .520 save percentage across nine appearances in net.
 
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges hold the best goal differential in the league at a whopping +92 with both the top-scoring offense (198 goals scored) and defense (106 goals allowed). Nick Kennedy recorded 75 points on 41 goals and 34 assists while three others scored at least 20 goals with Luke (Bear) Weigle holding down the hole-set with 25 drawn exclusions. Jake Taylor stopped 51.8 percent of shots faced with a 10.70 goals-against average in 11 games.
 
Third-seed Redlands enjoyed a strong debut season from junior college transfer Oliver Finley, who scored 27 goals in conference play while tying with Tim Jensen (17 goals, 13 assists) for the team lead on 30 points. Troy Barker surrendered 11.56 goals per game for the defending champion Bulldogs.
 
Occidental defeated Whittier in the foes’ only matchup of the regular season on Oct. 22, 15-12, and will have the luxury of hosting again for the rematch. Travis Hughes led the Tigers with 21 goals and 25 assists while Max Stone nabbed 29 steals and Quin Concannon and Danny Miller combined to earn 37 drawn exclusions. Goalkeeper Jack Schroeder just missed the .500-mark with a .492 save percentage on 128 saves and 11.70 goals allowed.
 
The Poets won on the final day of the regular season to secure their SCIAC Tournament berth. Zander Montoya notched team-highs in goals (32) and assists (18) with Noah Bigara a close second with 29 goals while also drawing an incredible 40 exclusions.
 
The final game will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
