Eight-time SCIAC record holder Alex Turvey of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and 1-meter diving champion Emma Ng Pack of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges were named the Swimmer and Diver of the Year at the 2023 SCIAC Championships.
Turvey took the top spot on the podium in all seven races she contested, three of which resulted in new SCIAC records as she claimed individual titles in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100 Fly in addition to the 200 Medley Relay. She also won the 100 Free and the other three relays in which she participated, turning in a dominant showing while ranking among the top 10 in the nation in five events (top three in the 50 Free and 100 Fly).
Ng Pack recorded a pair of marks that qualified her for NCAA Regionals as part of CMS sweeps on both boards, winning the 1m title after finishing runner-up in the 3m competition. She scored a 462.45 on the 1m and a 433.80 on the 3m for the highest combined total of any competitor.
Katy Shaw was awarded Newcomer of the Year after winning the distance freestyle events, taking the 500 Free title by less than a second but separating by nearly 10 in the 1650 Free. She also made the podium in third for the 200 Free and on the winning 800 Free Relay.
Caltech's Maddie Swint received the Character Award, which is presented to a senior who best exemplifies success in the pool, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. Swint is a team captain who scored at SCIACs every year she competed while pursuing achemical engineering major with a focus in sustainability. She has conducted multiple Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships, interned with C-Zero and has been a teaching assistant for three courses at Caltech. She is a campus Title IX Advocate, Orange Watch member, Orientation Leader and serves on the Sexual Assault and Gender Equity Student Council.
Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Juliet Suess and Chapman University, which finished in fourth place in their debut season. The Panthers were one of only two teams outside the Claremont Consortium to reach the podium in an individual event and the only to register three relays in third place.
CMS led all teams with 24 NCAA 'B" cuts achieved during the meet, followed by the Sagehens' 17 while Caltech had two and the University of Redlands one. Turvey's teammate Alexandra Gill made six trips to the podium, including setting the 100 and 200 Breast records and joining Turvey on the historic 200 Medley Relay. Gill ranks fourth in the country in the 100 and 200 Breast and ninth in the 50 Free. In addition to another Sagehen, Katherine Gould, a quintet of Athenas medaled on five occasions apiece - Ella Blake, Sun Young Byun, Augusta Lewis, Mackenzie Mayfield and Jamee Mitchum - with Blake, Byun, Lewis and Shaw setting a new 800 Free Relay conference mark. Lewis ranks second in Division III in the 200 IM, third in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200 Fly. Meghan Kluck and Sachi Tanizaki-Hudson led non-Claremont swimmers with a trio of podium appearances coming via Chapman's relays.
