Softball All-SCIAC Awards: Gandara, Malen Repeat Athletes of the Year

A pair of repeat honorees in Katlyn Gandara representing the University of Redlands and Rose Malen of Chapman University headlined the 2026 All-SCIAC Softball teams.

Gandara led the SCIAC in on-base percentage (.538) and RBI (26) while ranking second in batting average (.448) and slugging percentage (.690) at the plate. That production came in addition to going 10-0 with a 2.33 ERA in the circle for the nearly undefeated Bulldogs, who enter the SCIAC Tournament on a program-record 25-game win streak. The 2023 Pitcher of the Year as a rookie and 2024 Athlete of the Year, becomes the second three-time individual award-winner as Athlete of the Year once more, joining 2016-18 Pitcher of the Year Anna Gurr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Malen repeats as Pitcher of the Year having been the chief reason for Chapman University’s runner-up finish in the regular season. The senior permitted the lowest batting average against of all starters in the SCIAC at .195 while striking out 45 in 64.2 innings with a 1.52 ERA.

Rookie Caitlynn Griffith earned Newcomer of the Year recognition after posting a microscopic 0.47 ERA and .133 opposing batting average. The southpaw compiled a 6-0 record with three saves for the regular season champion Bulldogs over 11 appearances, all coming out of the bullpen.

California Lutheran University’s Riley Osborne was recognized with the Character Award, presented to a junior or senior who best exemplifies success on the diamond, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. An all-around team and unselfish player Osborne carried a constant positive attitude and was always willing to do whatever was best for the Regals. Off the field, the right fielder has worked with kids suffering from disability to show that anything is possible through hard work and determination. Osborne also serves as an athletic camp counselor each summer working with young athletes with limb differences.

Jose Ortega and the Bulldogs dugout were honored as Coaching Staff of the Year after constructing the most successful regular season in more than 20 years. Redlands has risen to a high of No. 4 in the national NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll after nearly going unbeaten with a 20-1 record in conference play that was eight games better than second place and carrying a 25-game win streak into the SCIAC Tournament. A run margin of +5.13 per game dwarfed the rest of the conference, with the only three other teams to post positive run differentials even combining for just +1.0 per game.

Redlands led all teams with seven All-Conference honorees, including five First Team selections. Whittier College's second-ranked offense resulted in five total and three FIrst Team picks while Chapman, CMS, the University of La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges each earned three choices. CLU and Occidental College picked up two apiece.

Gandara, Malen and Pomona-Pitzer's Kylie Liu joined rare company as four-time First Team All-SCIAC selections while Oxy's Alysha Wagner also earned a fourth career All-Conference honor. Cal Lutheran's Jessica Waters made the step up to the First Team after back-to-back Second Team nods, as did Hannah Adams (CMS) and Brooklyn Bard (Redlands). Kelly Nutter (Whittier) and Jenay Scott (Redlands) repeated on the First Team and 2024 Newcomer of the Year Giselle Lai (CMS) returned to the All-Conference mix after a one-year hiatus.
