Sagehens Narrow Gap as Athenas Retain Lead in 2026 SCIAC Women’s Swim & Dive Championship

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges won two individual events and the night’s relay to shave 12 points from yesterday’s deficit to trail Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by 10, 369-359.

Francesca Coppo improved on last year’s meet-record performance, claiming the 50-yard freestyle in 22.82, after rookie Ellie Burkhardt won the 500 Free. The 400 Medley Relay team of Amaia Sherman, Coppo, Taylor Park and Nina Aballea closed out the night with a comeback win thanks to the only sub-50 second split of the event courtesy of Aballea. Chapman University sits in third with 172 points, followed by California Lutheran University (155), Occidental College (122), Caltech (115), the University of Redlands (94), Whittier College (88) and the University of La Verne (58).  
 
Burkhardt opened the night with a 5:00.84 to win by one second over Corley Smith of CMS and fellow Sagehen Cassidy Schneider. CMS rookie Elyse Newlands made a statement in the 200 IM, coming back from fourth in the pack at the halfway mark to out-touch Bennett Jones of Pomona-Pitzer by just .04. Sun Young Byun joined Newlands on the podium for the Athenas while California Lutheran University’s Madi Bodhidatta took silver in the 50 Free and Madeleine Kan placed third by a touch. The 400 Medley Relay teams from CMS (Annika Sharma, Newlands, Byun, Kan) and Chapman (Cora Buelow, CJ Smith, Miranda Thompson, Alyssa Kooy) finished in second and third.
