For the first time in over 10 years, Chapman women's soccer has advanced to SCIAC Tournament Semi-Finals with a 3-2 win in penalty kicks over Occidental on Monday, November 2, in Los Angeles, Calif.
In what was a defensive battle all night, the biggest opportunity in regulation for either team came in the third minute, when the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick. However, Melanie Rodriguez managed to save the attempt to keep the game scoreless.
Across the initial 90 minutes as well, as both overtime periods, each team took eight shots on goal, with Chapman having the slight edge in total shots. Three of Occidental's shots on target came in overtime, all of which were saved by Sienna Gomez.
Then, in penalty kicks, both sides converted their first two attempts before Occidental's third shot was stopped by Gomez. On Chapman's third attempt, Gomez stepped up and found the back of the net, which proved to be the decider. Though, neither side was able to score on their fourth attepts, the Tigers failed to convert on their fifth shot as well and sealed the match.
The Panthers will next take on California Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m.
