Softball All-Conference: UR's Messenlehner, CU's Malen Named Athlete and Pitcher of Year

University of Redlands outfielder Paige Messenlehner and Chapman University’s Rose Malen have been named the Athlete and Pitcher of the Year to headline the 2025 SCIAC Softball All-Conference teams.

Messenlehner scored the most runs of anyone in conference play for the league’s regular season champion Bulldogs while also tying for first with 30 hits and 21 stolen bases. The two-time All-SCIAC Second Team choice also ranked seventh with a .429 batting average and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with two assists in right field.

Malen led the conference with both eight wins and four saves in 16 appearances. The junior ranked second in ERA (1.43) and third in innings pitched (73.1) as the only pitcher with more than one shutout (three). Malen also recorded by far the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the league at 51:5 to help fuel a 0.87 WHIP.

University of La Verne first-year Raegan Hallett was named Newcomer of the Year after ranking fourth in the conference with a .448 batting average. The rookie also posted a .462 on-base percentage and .586 slugging percentage as one of just 14 players to clear a 1.000 OPS.

The Character Award was presented to Madison Gonzalez of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in recognition of best exemplifying success on the diamond, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. An engineering major, Gonzalez was a part of the Academic Excellence team at Harvey Mudd College in addition to tutoring, proctoring the student-led metal and wood shop and conducted research into a novel space/water heating system for residential buildings.

Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Jose Ortega and the Bulldogs dugout. Redlands claimed a fourth consecutive and first outright regular season title since 2022. The Bulldogs led the conference with a .337 batting average that was .23 better than the next team and an 84-for-89 stolen base mark that dwarfed even the next three teams’ combined total to fuel a 6.5 runs per game average. Meanwhile, the pitching staff and defense recorded a league-best 2.28 ERA.

Redlands led all teams with seven total selections and tied with Chapman at four First Team nods. California Lutheran University landed two players on either team while Pomona-Pitzer’s First Team trio tied for next with three Second Team picks from CMS and three total honorees from La Verne. Former Athlete of the Year Devin Waddell earned the impressive distinction of making a fourth career First Team for Pomona-Pitzer while teammate Kylie Liu continued on the same track with a third nod in as many years. Last year’s Athlete of the Year and the 2023 Pitcher of the Year, Katlyn Gandara, and Chapman’s Miranda Murphy matched Liu’s feat while Messenlehner garnered a third total All-Conference honor. Another pair of Panthers, Jillian Kelly and Ilianna Serna, earned their third total and second career First Team acknowledgment with Malen and 2024 Pitcher of the Year Ashlyn Flinchum (CLU) repeating as First Team selections. Emma Suh (CMS) and Alysha Wagner (Occidental College) earned their third career All-Conference distinctions while both Angelina Alderete (ULV) and Olivia Vargas (CLU) picked up second consecutive All-Conference nods.
