NCAA Tournament: Redlands Second Ever SCIAC Team to Reach Quarterfinals

The No. 15 University of Redlands continued to make history with a statement 83-72 victory over No. 10 Hampden-Sydney College in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship on Friday afternoon.

After reaching the second weekend for the first time in program history, the Bulldogs have now become only the second team in SCIAC history to advance to the quarterfinals and first since Occidental College in 2003. Ranked 26th in the NPI entering the tournament, Redlands has now defeated No. 27 St. Joseph's College of Maine, No. 8 Tufts University and No. 11 Hampden-Sydney. 

The foes got off to a back-and-forth start through the first seven minutes of the game, with Hampden-Sydney leading 19-17 before Redlands exploded for 10 unanswered points. The margin stretched to 13 by halftime as Hampden-Sydney was held scoreless for the final three-plus minutes before the break and reached a game-high of 26 on a three-pointer by Jake Hlywiak with 12:02 remaining on the clock.

The Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the field including a 9-for-19 (47 percent) mark from beyond the arc with six players scoring between nine and 15 points. Kendrick Currey led the way with 15 points and six assists as the Bulldogs forced 21 turnovers.
