Men's Basketball Tournament: Kingsmen Advance Over Poets

SCIAC Athlete of the Year Devon Lewis drilled a game-winning three-pointer to send top-seeded No. 20 California Lutheran University to a third straight SCIAC Tournament final in a record-setting 90-89 victory over Whittier College.

On a night where both semifinal contests surpassed the previous record for combined points in a game and Division III leading scorer Aamari Smith matched the previous individual tournament record for points in a game, it was Lewis and the Kingsmen with the most to celebrate after defending their home court. After CLU sent Whittier to the line for a pair of free throws with six seconds left on the clock, the Kingsmen faced a two-point deficit and burned their final timeout to draw up an inbounds play that found Lewis wide open in the corner for a fourth last-second, game-winning shot this season that also put the senior over 30 points for a seventh time.

Both teams played fast but also took exceptional care of the ball all game, with the Poets’ three-point shooting woes (21 with six good to 36 percent with eight good) making a difference. In addition to 32 points from Lewis, the Kingsmen also received 14 with seven assists from Stephen Davis and 19 from Tommy Griffitts, who was unstoppable early with 13 of CLU’s first 17 points in the opening six minutes. Chine Nwanevu went 3-for-6 from downtown to score 16 points and Andrew Milot made an impact off the bench with 15 points and three assists.

The Kingsmen will host RV Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a rematch of last year’s SCIAC Tournament final on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 2 p.m.
