Chapman University Athletics has named Matt Mead as the Interim Head Coach for the men's and women's tennis teams in 2025. Mead had previously served as the assistant coach since the spring of 2020.

Mead commented on the opportunity, "Throughout my four-year playing career at Chapman University, I never could have guessed that I would have the opportunity to be a Head Coach at 28 years of age at my alma mater. I am very grateful for this opportunity and am hoping to make the most of it this season!"

"We are confident in Matt leading both of our tennis programs through this spring," Director of Athletics Terry Boesel said. "He has been a leader on the courts from his time as a student-athlete through the last several years as an assistant coach and is a natural fit to take on the role as Interim Head Coach."

An alumnus of Chapman's tennis program, Mead began his role as an assistant immediately after graduating. He was a four-year contributor and leader on the men's tennis team, helping the team transition into its new facility in 2017-18.

Since his playing days, Mead has gone on to become a nationally-ranked pickle ball player on two different tours while helping Chapman's tennis teams to SCIAC Tournament berths on both the men's and women's teams.

As Head Coach, Mead takes over a nationally-ranked men's program that recently earned a No. 35 ranking from the ITA. The Panthers made the SCIAC Tournament last year. The women's program last made the SCIAC Tournament in 2023. Both compete in one of the best tennis conferences in the NCAA Division III that often occupies four or more spots in the top-40 ranking.

"We have such a great and talented group of men and women representing our tennis program this year and I feel lucky to have to been here at the program assisting since 2020," added Mead. "Our team is going to have a great season with a lot of highly ranked opponents on our schedule. I'm looking forward to a great season of practice and long match days with the team and hopefully pulling off some big upsets this year. We're looking to have one of the best seasons yet."

Mead has named fellow alumnus Charlie Werman as a Volunteer Assistant Coach and will continue to fill out his staff for the season.
