Warren Pham provided the clinching point in a second-set tiebreaker as the No. 4-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team defeated No. 2 Chicago 4-1 in the title match of the ITA Indoor Championships on Sunday morning.
With the win, CMS moves to 7-0 on the season, and 4-0 against Division III competition, after sweeping through Swarthmore (5-2), Case Western (5-2) and Chicago (4-1) at indoors this weekend.
CMS took the doubles point with
Advik Mareeduand
Caleb Settles taking a 6-2 win at No. 1, and
Josh Kim and
Sibi Raja earning a 6-4 win at No. 2. The title match was played to clinch, so the No. 3 doubles line was left unfinished.
Mareedu made it 2-0 CMS with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1, and
Henry Wilson followed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5. With the score 3-1, Pham dominated the tiebreaker in the second set 7-1 to take a 6-1, 7-6 win and secure the team title.
Josh Kim was early in the third set after bouncing back after dropping a tiebreaker in the first set to earn a 6-1 win in the second and get a split, while Raja was up 7-6, 4-5 in the second when his match was halted.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts UC Santa Cruz at 10 a.m.
