The Leopards won their first regular season championship since 2008, notably stopping CMS at a record-tying nine straight titles to maintain their own record-setting streak from 2000-08. SCIAC Tournament champions for the first time last year, La Verne put the nation on notice as the AVCA No. 1 team for seven consecutive weeks until suffering the lone defeat of their season at Redlands. The Leos dominated in practically every aspect, leading the conference with a .236 team hitting percentage while holding opponents to a mere .100, recording 2.94 blocks per set and giving up less than an ace per set (0.91). National Player of the Year candidate Mya Ray led the SCIAC in kills (285, 5.0 per set) and hitting percentage (.345) while Zacky Coaston averaged a league-best 1.42 blocks at the net.

CMS survived a tight battle for the #2 seed, edging out both CLU and Whittier by a single match to secure hosting rights. Brooke McKee was second only to Ray with 4.14 kills per set and led the conference with 41 aces for an offense that nearly matched La Verne at 18.16 points per set. A league-best 19.48 digs per set, led by Mia Urosevic as one of three players to average over 5.0 per set, helped the Athenas also register a conference-leading 12.86 assists per set.

The Poets have made each of the last three iterations of the tournament but are still searching for their first set win. A head-to-head edge over CLU on point differential after the pair split regular season matchups handed Whittier the #3 seed and a rematch with CMS after the Poets notched a 3-0 sweep just last week. Last season’s Newcomer of the Year, Mia D’Amato, ranks third in hitting percentage (.318) and seventh in blocks per set (0.98).

The Regals return to the tournament field after a two-year hiatus that marked the only field in its 15-year history that CLU did not qualify. Digs leader Keegan Corley (5.71 per set) and teammates will be raring to make an impact as an extraordinarily qualified #4 seed at 11-5 in conference play. CLU swept Redlands, its opponent in the first round, over two regular season matches.

The Bulldogs will look to reprise their only other tournament appearance in program history, when they won the first iteration. While the victory over previously unbeaten La Verne is the highlight known nationally, Redlands also edged out CMS on Oct. 3 in a five-setter and feature five players who rank among the top 10 in the conference in at least one statistical category. Rookie Lily Kautai holds top billing with 28 aces (third) and 3.06 kills per set (fifth) while ‘Ale’amaikalani Paiva is fourth in digs per set (4.72).

The final match will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
