How You Can Become a Volleyball Official - Coordinator Donna Hess

Continuing our joint celebration of "Officials Appreciation Week," volleyball coordinator Donna Hess shares some thoughts on the pathway to becoming an official.

SCIAC officiating Hub

"We want to share an exciting part-time opportunity in the world of sports—volleyball officiating. It’s a rewarding role with the potential for significant growth and advancement.

Becoming an official is straightforward. You can start by joining your local High School Unit through the CVBOA website. Additionally, club volleyball runs from October through June each school year. For those interested in club officiating, please reach out to USA Volleyball or SCSN (our local region of USA Volleyball) to learn about the necessary training requirements. Also AAU and JVA have club volleyball officiating opportunities.

Training is essential for both high school and club officiating, and once you gain experience, you might consider officiating at the junior college and then college levels or even pursuing opportunities in professional leagues. For the more ambitious, there are pathways to advance to international officiating, allowing you to travel and ref all over the world."
