The 2024 Men’s Cross Country All-SCIAC Teams have been releases following Saturday’s Championship at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif. First Team All-SCIAC honors are determined by the top 10 finishers at the conference meet, while the Second Team consists of finishers 11-20. The Newcomer, Ray Adkinson and Coaching Staff of the Year Awards are voted on by the league’s member head coaches in consultation with their teams.
Adam Sage of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges got the better of a two-man race right to the finish line, crossing a mere 0.2 ahead of second place for the individual title. Sage had finished as the top Division III runner at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, the final tune-up of the regular season for five of the nine conference teams, capping a brilliant senior year in which he vaulted from placing 18
th individually at last year’s Championship.
Newcomer of the Year recognition went to
Jefferson Wright of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, who nabbed the final First Team spot in 10
th place. The rookie had moved into the champion Sagehens’ final scoring position at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite.
Teammate
Cameron Hatler was presented with the Ray Adkinson Award, named after the conference’s inaugural champion from Pomona College in 1915. Hatler placed second individually at the Championship and will lead the Sagehens in their hunt for a fourth national title in the last five seasons. A double major in math and computer science, Hatler has played a crucial role in shaping a positive team culture amid Pomona-Pitzer’s high-level achievements. He has worked on projects at UCLA and the Illinois Institute of Technology and intends to pursue a PhD in computer science to conduct research in explainable artificial intelligence.
Pomona-Pitzer also won Coaching Staff of the Year accolades as
Amber Williams and the Sagehens staff claimed a fourth consecutive conference title. Seven runners placed among the top 11 at the Championship race.
Sage is one of five runners to make a third career All-Conference team, with teammate
Oliver Pick the only three-time First Team qualifier. Pomona-Pitzer’s Hatler,
Jack Stein and
Owen Kobett each earned their second First Team honor, while
Evan Villano repeated on the Second Team.
Daniel Fajardo accomplished the same feat for CMS, with Caltech’s
Rohun Agrawal the only other two-time selection who repeated on the First Team.
