In a back-and-forth round of 16 contest, Pomona-Pitzer scored four minutes into the first period of overtime to break a scoreless tie as the Sagehens earned a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over Chicago in Saturday's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Third Round match at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 20-1-1 on the season and will take on Washington University (Mo.) in the national quarterfinals on Sunday, November 24 at 11 a.m. Chicago concludes its season 14-3-3 overall.
In the first half, the Maroons held a 5-3 edge in shots, with Pomona-Pitzer holding a 5-4 edge in the second half. Neither side was able to make a breakthrough as both goalkeepers Isa Berardo of the Sagehens, and Miranda Malone of Chicago logged three saves to keep the game scoreless after 90 minutes.
In the overtime session, Charlotte Tapp notched a shot for Pomona-Pitzer which went just wide of the frame at the 95 minute mark. She then found Anna Ponzio who placed a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net to lift the Sagehens to a thrilling victory.
Bria VarnBuhler had two of Pomona-Pitzer's three shots on target in regulation, while Helena Robinowitz had the other.
