SCIAC Football All-Conference Teams Announced

The 2017 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Football teams were announced Tuesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

Chapman senior quarterback Ricky Bautista was voted the 2017 SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year, while his senior teammate Austin Pyka excelled on the defensive line and was named the 2017 SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year.

Bautista led Chapman to a 6-3 overall record in 2017 including a perfect, 6-0 record in SCIAC play en route to earning his first all-conference honors. The Irvine, Calif. native was an impressive 108-for-149 (72.5%) and 1,856 yards through the air against league competition this season, throwing for a SCIAC-best 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also contributed three scores on the ground, collecting 179 yards on 31 carries. The First Team All-SCIAC quarterback led the Panthers to the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship - the program's second trip to the national tournament in the last four years.

Pyka helped anchor the defensive line for Chapman in 2017 earning SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year praise in addition to a First Team All-SCIAC nod. The senior from Anaheim Hills, Calif. and 2016 first team all-conference honoree capped a stellar career by making 21 tackles in five league games this season.

SCIAC Newcomer of the Year accolades went to Chapman's Dillon Keefe who made an immediate impact for the Panthers in his debut season. Keefe registered 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks, four tackles for a loss, and recovered a fumble in six conference games in 2017. For his efforts, the Orange, Calif. native was also a First Team All-SCIAC selection.

A three-time First Team All-SCIAC running back (2014, 2016, 2017), a Second Team All-SCIAC selection in 2015, and the 2014 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year, Aseal Birir of Pomona-Pitzer was voted the John Zinda Award winner in 2017. A Chemistry major boasting a 3.78 cumulate grade-point-average (GPA), Birir has held several internships doing clinical research on nosocomial bacterial infections. He has also spent a vast amount of time volunteering at the Young Men's Club in Pomona, Calif., as well as the Be Perfect Foundation in Claremont, Calif. He has also helped organize an annual 5-kilometer race to raise money and awareness for those living with paralysis.

For the second time since 2014, head coach Bob Owens and the Chapman coaching staff earned SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year recognition following an unblemished conference season. Owens led the Panthers to six straight league wins and the program's second SCIAC title and its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship. Owens, who was also named the SCIAC Coach of the Year in 2014, saw his Chapman offense average a league-best 521.5 yards per game en route to 3,129 yards of total offense in six conference games. In five of the Panthers' six league contests in 2017, the garnet and black scored at least 42 points.
