NCAA Championship: Stags Just a Few Points Short in National Title Match

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges finished their season just a few points shy of a national title in a 4-3 defeat to the University of Chicago.

With the match moved indoors due to weather, the Stags still managed to take the doubles point with emphatic 6-1 and 6-3 wins at the top two courts. Advik Mareedu added the expected next point with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #1 singles but meanwhile Chicago had begun to chip away with first-set advantages on the bottom four courts. SCIAC Newcomer of the Year Henry Wilson managed to flip things at #3 and won in a third set, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 but the Maroons claimed courts #5 and #6 and leveled the match in a 6-1, 7-6 (4) decision at #4. Warren Pham faced a 6-4, 1-6, 1-5 deficit before fighting back to 4-5 but could not come up with another break of serve and Chicago took home the trophy.

Individuals who qualified will continue play in the singles and doubles brackets starting this weekend.
