Women's Basketball Tournament: Bulldogs Advance Over Panthers

Fourth-seeded University of Redlands advanced over #5 seed Chapman University, 79-61, in the First Round of the SCIAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night.

The host Bulldogs raced out to an early lead, doubling up the Panthers 10-5 over the first four minutes. Redlands stretched the lead to 12 just before halftime, when a Maile Nakaji buzzer-beating heave trimmed the margin back to single digits. The Panthers cut the deficit to as little as four points in the first three minutes of the third quarter before the hosts distanced themselves again, reaching a game-high of 20 with four minutes remaining in the game.

AJ Wick double-doubled with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Teagan McIlroy added 15 points and six assists for the Bulldogs as head coach Rich Murphy recorded a 300th career victory. Makenna Nitao dropped 19 points for the Panthers.

Redlands will head to top-seeded California Lutheran University for a semifinal matchup on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
