SCIAC Leads DIII in Recent MLB Draftees

A lengthy tradition continued as the 2025 Major League Baseball Rule 4/First-Year Player Draft concluded, with another SCIAC alum selected.

Former Chapman pitcher Max Banks was selected in the 14th round out of Washington University, where he was named Second Team All-Big Ten this season after earning First Team All-SCIAC honors in 2023.

As a conference the SCIAC leads all of Division III in MLB draft picks in the 21st century.

Chapman leads all of DIII with 13 draft picks of current or recently graduated players since 2000 while California Lutheran ranks second (11) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges tied for fourth (eight) with one player, Chico Cortez, selected in back-to-back years. Eight of nine SCIAC institutions have had at least one player drafted in the last 25 years and the conference will be welcoming one of the most successful NAIA/DII baseball programs in Azusa Pacific University, which has seen 20 players drafted in the last 13 years alone, beginning in 2026-27.

Success in the minor leagues also is not foreign to SCIAC alumni, with versatile former Kingsman Brendan Durfee most recently advancing to A+ in the San Diego Padres organization. Former Sagehen Tanner Nishioka reached AA in 2018 with Boston while Ryan Long has peaked in AAA with Baltimore and has thrown 75.0 innings at AA this summer. Nick Garcia, the former Panther and highest SCIAC pick since MLB regular Jason Hirsch went to Houston in the second round in 2003, also is pitching in AA this summer after cracking the AAA roster for Pittsburgh last year.
