Baseball All-Conference Awards: PP's Gold, CLU's Wechsler Named Athlete, Pitcher of Year

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges’ Jack Gold and California Lutheran University’s Luke Wechsler were named Athlete and Pitcher of the Year atop the 2025 SCIAC Baseball All-Conference teams.

Gold led the conference with a .575 on-base percentage and ranked second with a massive .935 slugging percentage for nine home runs and 32 RBI despite missing six games. Splitting time between second base and left field, the sophomore made 39 put-outs and 25 assists for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage to fuel the Sagehens to a No. 22 national ranking and #2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament.

Wechsler posted a 2.47 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 54.2 innings pitched for the No. 23 Kingsmen. The senior tossed two complete games including one shutout as part of four wins while suffering just a single loss.

University of Redlands first-year Rylan Morris earned Newcomer of the Year recognition after compiling a .326/.379/.543 triple slash line with 26 runs and 23 RBI.

Whittier College’s Nathan Sherman was named the Character Award winner, presented to a senior who best exemplifies success on the diamond, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. A four-year Poet and two-year captain, Sherman has been involved in numerous campus organizations including the Kinesiology Society, SAAC and the admissions department as a student-athlete ambassador and will go on to a year-long internship with the National Junior Golf Association upon graduation.

Scott Winterburn and the champion Leopards dugout were named Coaching Staff of the Year. The Leos posted a .372 team batting average and .466 on-base percentage while recording a 3.86 ERA that was more than half a run better than the second-ranked team.

The Leopards led all teams with five First Team and seven total selections, followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges with three First Team and five total. Pomona-Pitzer’s JC Ng made a third First Team and fourth career All-Conference team while La Verne catcher Nathan Perry three-peated as the top backstop in the conference. The CMS duo of Andrew Mazzone and Dillon Martin repeated on the First Team while a trio of players – Wechsler and ULV duo Ethan Galindo and Noah Garcia – stepped up from Second Team appearances two seasons ago. Luke De Vries (UR) and Maximus Berber (WC) repeated on the Second Team with La Verne’s Benny Vogel returning to the squad from 2023 and Redlands’ Mark Kirkland, who spent two years at the Division I level, returned to the All-Conference picture since last making the First Team in 2022.
