The Pomona-Pitzer star duo of
Kyle Huang and rookie
Tommy Matheis swept the SCIAC Athlete, Diver and Newcomer of the Year awards at the 2025 Swimming & Diving Championship.
Huang picked up two individual event wins and a relay title while increasing a two-year career total of All-SCIAC selections to nine. The sophomore repeated as the 400-yard Individual Medley champion and added the 200 Fly gold to the trophy case in addition to a close runner-up finish in the 200 IM and 400 Free Relay championship.
Matheis, who earned an unprecedented five SCIAC Athlete of the Week accolades over the season, won Diver of the Year honors in a pair of top-class battles with Chapman University's
Jake Randazzo by virtue of the highest combined total dive score on both boards. The first-year claimed the 3-meter title (524.00) and was a close runner-up in a thrilling end to the 1m competition (481.10).
University of Redlands early graduate
Cole Goyette was presented with the Character Award, bestowed upon a senior who best exemplifies success in the pool, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. The standing President of the UR Psychological Honors Society and a member of the SAAC executive board, Goyette is heavily involved in campus service and team-building while also leading the swim & dive program's Team Impact squad, which provides a community for children and young adults deprived of the opportunity to participate in sports due to disability or serious injury.
Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to
Barry Schreifels and California Lutheran University. The Kingsmen moved up one spot from fifth in the 2024 standings to fourth, with a jump from 303 to 417 points putting them just 25.5 out of third place.
Lincoln Hall secured a pair of individual titles with likely NCAA-qualifying times while junior college transfer
Markus Stegbuchner took third in both the 100 and 200 Breast.
Chapman's
Simon Jacobs was the lone swimmer to medal in the maximum seven events at the Championship, with runner-up finishes in the 100 Free and 100 Fly and a silver medal on the 400 Medley Relay. Huang and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges duo of
Dylan Krueger and
Jeremy Tan each made the podium in six races, though Huang was the only other swimmer to medal in all three individual events. Pomona-Pitzer's
Adrian Clement now is the active career leader in total All-SCIAC performances with 17 while Krueger concludes a sterling career with 15 All-SCIAC accolades. A CMS trio moved up the rankings with
Evan Deedy notching an eighth combined individual and relay title for 12 total while
Jeremy Tan secured an 11th and six-time champion
Lucas Lang earned a ninth career All-Conference selection. Chapman University's
Trent Calloway netted an eighth All-SCIAC appearance including a debut atop the 100 Fly podium, as did Pomona-Pitzer's
Casey Jacobs. Relay specialists
Theodore Johnson (CMS) and
Riley Coleman (CU) notched their eighth medal-winning performances while
Maxim Polovinkin (CU) reached five, which
Cyrus Gaylord (CMS) matched on the diving boards and rookie
Diego Hodge (PP)
and
Spencer Merodio (CMS) also accomplished between a mix of individual and relay events.
