Football All-SCIAC Awards: Chapman's Pacheco, Zimmerman Sweep Athletes of the Year

Chapman University's Tyler Pacheco and Tate Zimmerman have been named the Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Year to headline the 2025 Football All-SCIAC teams.

Pacheco quarterbacked the conference's top-scoring offense as the only team to average more than 30 points per game. The senior threw for 1,098 yards on a 60.9 completion percentage with a 10:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio while also ranking fourth in the league with 61.3 rushing yards per game and four touchdowns. A 217-yard, three-TD performance lifted Chapman to a come-from-behind victory in the SCIAC Championship Game.

Zimmerman headed up the conference's top defensive unit which allowed just 14.6 points per game with a league-high 24 sacks. The senior ranked second in the SCIAC with 14.5 of 31 total tackles coming for a loss and was fourth with four sacks - all solo. Zimmerman also broke up four passes and intercepted a fifth before registering 2.5 tackles for loss and six quarterback hits in the SCIAC Championship Game victory.

University of Redlands first-year Mark Mitchell was named the Newcomer of the Year after taking control of the backfield for the Bulldogs early in conference play. After seeing just nine carries in the first three games of the season, the rookie racked up 484 yards over the final seven contests including a season-high 114 on just 10 carries with a touchdown against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Mitchell also caught 15 passes and returned 22 combined kicks/punts in a busy debut season.

California Lutheran University's Kyle Howie was acknowledged with the John Zinda Award, which recognizes a senior player who best exemplifies the high ideals and characteristics demonstrated by John Zinda, the former football coach and athletic director at CMS. Howie has been a consistent on-field performer across a four-year career, totaling 5,165 yards on 130 punts (39.7 average), 28 of which landed inside the 20-yard line to earn three SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors and a pair of All-SCIAC selections. The senior constantly encourages and supports teammates struggling with academics or athletic performance, plays a role in film review and assists with marketing and social media content for the athletics department. Founder of the Cal Lutheran Grand-Buddy Program with University Retirement Village, coordinator for "Be the Match" bone marrow donation, an NCAA leadership conference representative and SAAC member, Howie also has tutored in the writing center and is the CLU Public Relations Director with the PR Society of America. With an ever-positive mindset, always quick to congratulate opposing players and encouraging teammates to compete with integrity, Howie has promoted respect for everyone, community values and enhancement of the fan experience at CLU.

Interim head coach Casey Shine and the Chapman sideline were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year after leading Chapman to the first unbeaten mark in conference play since 2021 and the Panthers' second Championship Game victory in three seasons. Chapman posted a +17.7 margin of victory over eight games, averaging more than 30 points per contest as the league's top offense and limiting opponents to just 14.6 points as the stingiest defense to boot.

CLU led all programs with 11 First Team and 16 total selections, followed by Chapman with 10 First Team and 15 total honorees. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges landed four First Team accolades while Redlands totaled nine picks between the two squads, with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges landing six total and the University of La Verne having three players recognized. Michael Houk, the 2022 Newcomer of the Year, earned a third career First Team nod for CMS while CLU's Gavin Quiroz and Redlands' Benjamin Fitchett each landed third career All-Conference recognition, with Quiroz repeating on the First Team. Other First Team repeats included Jacob Gaudi (CU), Aaron Muniz (UR), Jimmy Rumsey (ULV) and Gavin Scott (CU) while Pacheco, Hunter Hall (CLU), Kyle Howie (CLU, Alden Kling (PP) and Zimmerman each made the step up from Second Team. Kalani Pickett (PP) earned a second consecutive All-SCIAC nod and Lane Forti (CU) repeated on the Second Team.
