Michael Ma of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges has reclaimed the mantle of SCIAC Lee Fulmer Athlete of the Year to headline the 2024 Men's Golf All-Conference teams. Ma was the top individual medalist in the SCIAC Championship at -6 and recorded the lowest scoring average across all seven rounds in SCIAC play this season (70.4).
Ken Sherman Newcomer of the Year designation went to Jay Wing from the University of La Verne. The rookie was one of just seven players to card two rounds in the 60’s, both of which came in his victorious SCIAC #2 performance. Only five players recorded a better combined score between SCIAC #1 and #2.
Ma was also presented with the Jesse Clark Sportsmanship Award at the SCIAC Championship. Clark was a member of the CMS golf program and a captain who graduated in 1965. Clark was easygoing, competitive, and dedicated to being a student-athlete. In April of 1966, he died in action in Vietnam and the award was started in his memory. The winner of this award is selected by members of each SCIAC men's golf team and goes to "the golfer who best demonstrates the high quality of skill and sportsmanship exemplified by Jesse Clark.” Ma’s coach, Mitchell Fedorka, noted that he “embodies integrity and sportsmanship, always playing with skill and a positive attitude. His leadership as team captain is exemplary, leading by example and fostering a supportive environment. He is a standout individual who will excel in any endeavor.”
Jamie Zantua and the champion University of Redlands Bulldogs were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year. Redlands won the SCIAC Championship by four strokes for the program's first conference title since 2015. Third at last year’s championship and ranked fourth in the 2024 Preseason Poll, the Bulldogs built up an eight-stroke lead to weather the only below-par rounds of the tournament from both their closest challengers on the final day.
CMS and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges tied for the most total selections with four apiece, with Adrian Chiu joining Ma on the First Team for CMS while Tucker Lee made his All-Conference debut on the First Team. California Lutheran University’s Adam Cartozian and Jot Singh each made the First Team while Redlands and La Verne landed one on each team in Aaron Buck, a repeat selection from last year, and Shreyas Kumaresh, who bumped up a spot from Second Team. Cartozian matched his placement from last spring while Chiu returned after a one-year hiatus, with Occidental College’s Adam Elshamy finally earning First Team honors after back-to-back years on the Second Team. Yuki Bannai also became a three-time All-Conference selection alongside fellow Sagehens John Kim, the 2023 Ken Sherman Newcomer of the Year and a First Team choice, and Max Rockrohr, who made his second consecutive appearance on the Second Team.
