Sagehens Reclaim Women’s Tennis Championship

The second-seeded and national No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens defeated top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 5-3, to reclaim the SCIAC Women's Tennis Tournament title early Saturday afternoon.

CMS took two of three doubles matches to carry a 2-1 lead into singles as Alisha Chulani and Nika Batoshvili claimed the top court, 8-5 while Sena Selby and Audrey Yoon won third doubles, 8-6. Pomona-Pitzer's Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou claimed the Sagehens' lone point at #2, 8-5.

The Sagehens quickly took control of the match's momentum as they went ahead a set on courts 3 and 5 in addition to winning tiebreakers on both the top two courts. Batoshvili would earn the first singles point at #6 (6-3, 6-3) for CMS but Pomona-Pitzer went on to take courts 1-3 to pull within one point of clinching the match. Leticia Bazua Vazquez provided the decisive point with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 victory at court 5.

The Sagehens will await their placement in the NCAA Championship bracket while the previously undefeated Athenas will expect to receive an at-large bid on the Selection Show this Monday, May 4.
