Defending national champion California Lutheran University’s
Avery West repeated as SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year and
Hannah Hong made it back-to-back years with Offensive Athletes of the Year for Pomona-Pitzer Colleges to headline the 2024 All-Conference Teams.
Hong emerged as the conference’s premier scoring threat with an expected breakout season in which the winger notched a league-best seven goals, including four game-winners, in conference play. Hong also led the conference in shots (30) and shots on goal (19) with a clinical 23 percent conversion rate as a threat to score from anywhere in the opposition’s half.
West continued to serve as an imposing two-way force marauding forward from right back for the Regals, which still earned votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 ranking and whose only two defeats in the regular season came at the hands of the Sagehens in one-goal games. Not only did West contribute on the second-stingiest defense in the conference, but also scored three game-winning goals and tied for the fifth-most shots of any player.
Whittier College garnered its second consecutive Newcomer of the Year recognition in
Jessica Jensen, who tied for ninth in the SCIAC with three goals. The Poets captured the #4 seed to return to the conference Tournament for the first time since winning it in 2017 and can look ahead to a bright future as Jensen has paired with 2023 Newcomer of the Year
Madeline Traylor.
The Award of Distinction was presented to
Madie Fahey from Cal Lutheran. A Scholar-Athlete and Dean’s List honoree all three years, Fahey has weathered a chronic injury condition to play in 45 collegiate games and has organized a soccer camp at Cal Lutheran each year for 30-50 children with special needs. Fahey will graduate with a degree in communications, emphasis in sports communications and has volunteered with the Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation, Eskaton Care Center, Sacramento Running Association, St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish and St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
David Nolan and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges bench were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year after steering the Athenas to the most points accumulated by a third-place team in the standings since 2018. In the mix for the title until the final day of the season, the Athenas offense exploded for three or more goals on five occasions.
Pomona-Pitzer led all teams with five First Team and six total All-Conference selections, including four repeat choices in 2023 Offensive Athlete of the Year
Ella Endo, two-time First Team picks
Spencer Deutz and
Patricia DePalma, and
Vivian Rojas Collins who stepped up from the Second Team last year. Cal Lutheran and CMS landed three players apiece on the First Team and one Second Team pick, with
Savana Durr elevating to the First Team for the Regals while
Kaitlyn Helfrich earned the rare distinction of four career First Team honors for the Athenas, who also saw
Annie McKinley repeat on the top squad and 2022 Newcomer of the Year
Cate Lewison step up from the Second Team that season before missing the majority of 2023 due to injury. Whittier and Chapman University each had three players selected, with the Poets’ Traylor repeating on the First Team and
Alanis Cervantes achieving the same on the Second Team. The Panthers’
Emma Harper and
Jenna Urrabazo earned their third career All-Conference nods, with Harper garnering a second consecutive First Team accolade.
Maren Handel reprised last year’s position on the Second Team and teammate
Miranda McGarry made a long-awaited return to the All-Conference picture for the University of La Verne. Jordan National Team member
CJ Akroush picked up First Team recognition for the University of Redlands. Caltech’s career goals leader,
Jennifer Solgaard, capped a brilliant career for the seven-year-old program with a second consecutive Second Team performance.
Haley Jacobson represented Occidental College on the Second Team.
The 2024 SCIAC Women’s Soccer Tournament has gotten underway with #4 seed Whittier defeating #5 Chapman in the inaugural First Round matchup on Monday night. The semifinals will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6 as Whittier faces #1 Pomona-Pitzer at 2 p.m. and #2 Cal Lutheran hosts #3 CMS at 7 p.m.
