University of Redlands duo
Phillip Kostenko and
Owen Jamieson swept the SCIAC Offensive and Defensive Athlete of the Year accolades to headline the 2024 All-Conference Teams.
Kosentko is the second Bulldog in a row to earn Offensive Athlete of the Year recognition after leading the conference’s most potent offense in points (21) with seven goals and seven asissts in just 11 games. The high-powered offense helped Redlands secure its first regular season title since a four-year run from 2014-17 and holds the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament, which it last won in 2021.
Jamieson and the Bulldogs defense posted by far the fewest goals allowed at a meager 0.83 per game with just 39 shots on goal surrendered. The senior led Redlands with 953 minutes played while starting all 12 games, in which he added one game-winning goal and an assist.
Matthew Luk merited Caltech’s fifth Newcomer of the Year honor in the last seven years. The rookie tied for fourth in the SCIAC with 16 points on six goals and four assists.
Caltech’s
Andrew Chiang also netted accolades in the form of the Award of Distinction. A captain and crucial team leader who plays nearly every minute of every game and did not accumulate a single yellow card over a four-year career. An Applied and Computational Mathematics major with a minor in Computer Science, Chiang has completed numerous research fellowships in machine learning with Caltech’s Climate Modeling Alliance, HVAC systems with Fieldpiece, cost analysis for Stantec as well as teaching tennis to children with autism as part of Aceing Autism and tutoring refugees in math and English with the 1Must program in San Diego.
Coaching Staff of the Year acknowledgement went to
Ralph Perez and the Redlands bench after the Bulldogs posted a conference-best 22-goal difference to win the regular season title. Perez’s squad suffered only two defeats in 12 matches while scoring four or more goals in half of their games while recording five shutouts, including a run of four straight from Oct. 9-19.
Redlands led all teams with six First Team and seven total All-Conference selections as Kostenko made a big jump up from the Second Team in 2023. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges landed three players on the First Team and matched Occidental College with four total.
Shaan Malik of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges repeated on the First Team while
Rafael Otero also repeated while earning his third career All-Conference accolade and fellow Stag
John Gomez stepped up from the Second Team.
Vicente Navarro and
Max Stanley each moved up to the First Team for Oxy, with
Andrew Notter earning his second straight All-Conference nod.
Ishaan Mantripragada made his third straight All-SCIAC First Team as 2022 Newcomer of the Year
Etienne Casanova made his second consecutive top squad for a third career All-Conference bid. Chapman University’s
Jackson Busby also earned his third consecutive First Team honor, while the University of La Verne’s
Adan Villarreal stepped up from the Second Team and
Oscar Mendoza returned to the All-Conference picture after earning recognition in 2022. California Lutheran University’s
JP Melgoza appeared on his third career All-SCIAC team while Whittier College’s
Rowan Slater and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges’
Keyon Namdar, the 2022 Newcomer of the Year, made their second each. Fellow Sagehen
Niclas Ulrich also earned his third career honor.
The 2024 SCIAC Men’s Soccer Tournament has gotten underway with #5 seed Chapman defeating #5 Cal Lutheran in the inaugural First Round matchup on Tuesday night. The semifinals will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7 as Chapman faces #1 Redland and #2 CMS hosts #3 Occidental at 7 p.m.
