The 2024 Women’s Cross Country All-SCIAC Teams have been releases following Saturday’s Championship at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif. First Team All-SCIAC honors are determined by the top 10 finishers at the conference meet, while the Second Team consists of finishers 11-20. The Newcomer, Celia Peterson and Coaching Staff of the Year Awards are voted on by the league’s member head coaches in consultation with their teams.
Riley Capuano continued a three-year ascent up the SCIAC cross country ranks as the top individual finisher last Saturday to become Athlete of the Year for champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Having placed 14
th in cross country and winning track & field Newcomer of the Year accolades in 2023, Capuano stepped up to place third individually last fall before assuming the mantle of champion as a junior. Athlete of the Week honors on
Oct. 7 following the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. portended a strong performance in which Capuano led the race from start to finish, steadily shaking competitors from the lead pack until running alone for the majority of the second half of the race and finishing with the only sub-22 time of 21:57.80.
Sadie Drucker became the Athenas’ fifth consecutive Newcomer of the Year, debuting as a sophomore after missing the 2023 season. An opening-weekend 18:04.2 performance on 5k of the same course at the Mark Covert Classic garnered
Athlete of the Week honors before Drucker kept pace with Capuano through the first half of the race, eventually settling three seconds back to place second in 2:00.80.
The Celia Peterson Award, in recognition of the inaugural women’s cross country champion from Caltech in 1977, was bestowed upon
Chloe Bullock from the University of Redlands. A health, medicine and society major, Bullock not only earned All-America honors but holds the program records in both the 5k and 6k. The
Sept. 9 Athlete of the Week is a team leader who personifies kindness and humility, is very active on campus and has traveled to Spain and Panama to assist with clinics and humanitarian organizations.
Marina Muncan and the CMS staff won a fourth straight Coaching Staff of the Year accolade. The Athenas overcame significant injuries to top of their top runners, still lifting a 14
th consecutive trophy at the conclusion of the SCIAC Championship. Four runners placed among the top six, including champion Capuano and newcomer Drucker in first and second place.
CMS led all programs with four First Team honorees as
Angie Gushue earned the rare distinction of qualifying for a fourth career First Team accolade and 2023 Newcomer of the Year
Revere Schmidt stepped up from Second Team recognition as a rookie. Pomona-Pitzer’s eight total selections were best in the conference with
Katie Cline the Sagehens’ top finisher, stepping up from the Second Team last season. Bullock and Caltech’s
Sophie Dalfonzo each earned their fourth career All-Conference nod, with Bullock leading three Redlands selections including two-time Second Teamer
Eve Mavy and Dalfonzo placing four spots head of fellow Beaver
Gigi Pistilli, who made a third straight Second Team. Occidental College’s
Jenna LeNay made her third All-Conference team with a second consecutive top-five finish, a feat matched by
Annika Carlson from Chapman University.
Summer Gelman rounded out the First Team debuting for California Lutheran University.
