Football All-Conference Awards: PP's Wimmer, Chapman's Terriquez Earn Athlete of the Year Distinctions

SCIAC Championship Game stars Quinten Wimmer of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Alexander Terriquez of Chapman University have been named the Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Year to headline the football All-Conference teams.

Asked to do a little bit of everything in the Sagehens’ offense over the course of the season, Wimmer totaled 449 yards on 41 catches with six touchdowns along with another 141 on the groundand 48 through the air. A 10-catch, 164-yard performance with the game-winning touchdown in the Championship Game punctuated a brilliant senior year that helped seal Pomona-Pitzer’s second-ever NCAA Championship appearance after first making the field in 2022.

Terriquez’s disruptive presence in the middle of the field was crucial to Chapman’s ability to shut down some potent running gameplans and often set the tone for the entire defense’s performance. With 62 tackles - 8.5 for loss and 5.5 as sacks – the senior led the conference’s stingiest defense entering Championship Week at a meager 15.7 points allowed per game.

California Lutheran University’s Blake Hurley made an immediate impact in a debut season that included Athlete of the Week recognition on Sept. 16 following the Kingsmen’s first game of the season, in which the rookie force a fumble, picked off a pass and notched two tackles for loss. A fumble recovery and sack as part of a career-high nine-tackle day bookended the season with 33 tackles and another three for loss to his name.

Teammate Jackson White was presented with the prestigious John Zinda Award which recognizes a senior player who best exemplifies the high ideals and characteristics demonstrated by John Zinda, the former football coach and athletic director at CMS. White has achieved at a high level in performance, leadership, integrity, sportsmanship, positive attitude and academics as a two-time All-SCIAC selection, team captain who displays leadership daily in numerous ways, model student and person who congratulates opponents on good plays and has also served as an ambassador or the Be the Match blood drive. The Kingsmen’s Defensive Most Valuable Player and Most Inspiration Player last fall, he is relentlessly positive and graduated last spring with a bachelor’s degree in communications, now pursuing his master’s in business administration.

John Walsh and the Pomona-Pitzer sideline earned Coaching Staff of the Year recognition after leading the Sagehens to a first outright SCIAC title and second-ever NCAA Championship bid. An epic rally from a 21-point halftime deficit in the Championship Game will not be forgotten anytime soon as the Sagehens enter the NCAA Championship on a six-game conference win streak.
