CMS Reclaims SCIAC All-Sports Standings Trophy

All-Sport Standings

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges edged out Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for the 2023 SCIAC All-Sports Standings trophy, reclaiming the title after the Sagehens had broken up a 12-year streak prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Athenas led the conference with 95.8 points accrued while the Stags were second by just one point at 79, totaling 174.8 to beat the Sagehens to the title by just 6.8 points. The CMS men won three of four spring sports and finished second in the other (baseball), while the women's teams claimed titles in tennis and track & field as well as a share of softball, in addition to being runner-up in lacrosse and water polo. The Sagehens won women's golf, lacrosse and water polo while earning second-place points from women's tennis as well as 10-point hauls in golf and track & field on the men's side.

The University of Redlands placed third with 123.8 points, followed by Chapman University (112.3), California Lutheran University (100), Occidental College (84), the University of La Verne (77), Whittier College (57.5) and Caltech (53.5). Every one of Redlands' spring teams finished at least sixth place or higher, while Chapman had none finish worse than seventh. La Verne was the only other institution to win a regular season title outright in the spring (baseball), while Chapman and Redlands shared points with CMS as part of a three-way tie atop the softball standings.

ABOUT

The All-Sports champion earns the SCIAC All-Sports Trophy which is given annually to the school that performs the best across the league's 21 sports. Ten points are awarded for a first-place finish in the regular-season conference standings, eight for a second, seven for a third, and so on. Men's and women's performances are combined, exemplifying the conference's commitment to equity and balance among programs.

The combined SCIAC All-Sports Trophy has been awarded since 1976-77 with Pomona-Pitzer earning five of the first six titles. CMS has won 12 consecutive combined all-sports trophies since 2008-09 and leads the league with 32 overall. The Sagehens are second with six combined all-sports titles, followed by Occidental and Redlands which have three each. Prior to the 1976-77 season, a single men's sports trophy was awarded for four years with CMS earning three of those (1972-73, 1974-75, 1975-76) and Redlands one (1973-74).
