SCIAC Women's Swimming & Diving All-Conference Announced
The 2022 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards were announced Thursday, following a vote conducted by the league's head coaches during the final day of the conference championships.
Pomona-Pitzer's Alex Turvey garnered 2022 SCIAC Swimmer of the Year honors. Turvey helped lead the Sagehens to the team title with individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (23.16), the 100-yard freestyle (49.96), and the 100-yard butterfly (54.67). She also had a hand in Pomona-Pitzer's four winning relays which included the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.12), the 400-yard medley relay (3:45.00), the 200-yard freestyle relay (3:47.39), and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.80).
Ruby Epstein earned 2022 SCIAC Diver of the Year honors after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and finishing as the high-point scorer on the boards. Epstein registered a winning mark of 467.15 points in the 1-meter event and added a score of 445.80 on the 3-meter board.
The Sagehens' Avery Turney was voted the 2022 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.03), and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.49), and third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.33). She also played a role in Pomona-Pitzer's four winning relays which included the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.12), the 400-yard medley relay (3:45.00), the 200-yard freestyle relay (3:47.39), and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.80).
Redlands' Makenna Parenti was voted the 2022 SCIAC Character Award winner. Parenti is a selfless teammate who attended every single practice, added diving to her repertoire during her sophomore year, was the freshmen class team captain in 2018-19, and served as mentor extraordinaire during her senior year. Graduating in Communication Sciences and Disorders, with a minor in Psychology in the Spring of 2022, Parenti has been admitted to multiple master's programs for the Fall of 2022. While competing in swimming and diving, she held the following additional jobs: UR Admissions Student Ambassador (represented Redlands as the face of the University for prospective students); worked alongside counselors to plan and execute day visits, college fairs, student panels, and virtual tours, and NSSLHA (National Student Speech Language Hearing Association as secretary and fundraiser for four years as well as organizing and facilitating events supporting the NSSLHA chapter of Redlands). She has also helped raise at least $100 per semester for organizations such as the National Hearing Loss Association and the American Cancer Society, volunteered at community events including Relay for Life, Japanese International Student Visit (Osaka Event at Redlands), and "Bug Buddies" After School Program. As part of NSSLHA & Delta Kappa Psi she has participated in community service at Redlands Family Services, LA Union Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter, and Loma Linda Hospital. Competing at her highest, contributing to the University as a whole, and giving back to the community, she has a demonstrated balance in her studies, athletics, and community service.
Pomona-Pitzer head coach JP Gowdy and his Sagehens staff were voted the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth consecutive season. Gowdy helped Pomona-Pitzer clinch a fourth team title the last six attempts, having last won in 2019. The Sagehens collected 1192 points to seal the team crown.
