SCIAC Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference Announced
The 2022 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards were announced Thursday, following a vote conducted by the league's head coaches during the final day of the conference championships.
The 2022 SCIAC Swimmer of the Year honors went to California Lutheran's Luke Rodarte following his tremendous performance at the 2022 SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships. Rodarte earned the distinction after winning both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, clocking respective times of 52.98 and 1:57.75. He also helped the Kingsmen to a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (3:18.62), as well as third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley (1:29.50) and 200-yard freestyle relays (1:23.39). This is the third consecutive Swimmer of the Year honor for Cal Lutheran.
Caltech diver Sam Solomon was tabbed the 2022 SCIAC Diver of the Year after finishing first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 507.50, and second on the 3-meter board with a score of 498.15. He was the high-point scorer for the meet in diving.
Nick Tekieli of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) was voted the 2022 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. Tekieli won the 50-yard freestyle (20.32), the 100-yard freestyle (44.73), and the 100-yard backstroke (48.58). He also contributed to the Stags' winning relay teams in the 200-yard medley relay (1:28.57), 400-yard medley relay (3:15.05), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.18), and the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:00.30) to help CMS seal the team title.
The 2022 SCIAC Character Award went to Caltech's Rafael Santiago. Santiago is a double-major at Caltech in ACM (applied and computational mathematics) and BEM (Business, Economics, and Management). A four-year team member with significant improvement in the pool, he is also the co-founder and Internal Relations Director of CAUSE (Coalition of American University Student Experiences) Philippines which aims to inform underprivileged Filipinos about educational opportunities abroad. The organization has helped around 50 students win about $15 million in scholarships from 90 universities worldwide. Santiago is also a TA for BEM 117, Math 3/103, ACM 104, BEM 103, and ACM 116, a Quantitative Trading Analyst Summer Associate with the Chicago Trading Company, a David C. Elliot Research Fellow, a Trading Analyst Intern with Group One Trading, a Student Investment Fund, a member of Quant Finance Club, and an Admissions Ambassador. Santiago has done a tremendous job of balancing a rigorous academic course load with his athletic endeavors in the pool along with helping others through the CAUSE program. He has been a successful researcher and intern as well. He has been a tremendous team player, an advocate for Caltech's international students, and an all-around positive, supportive, and encouraging teammate.
Caltech head coach Andrew Brabson and his coaching staff were voted the 2022 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year. Brabson led the Beavers to a third-place finish in the team standings (690 points) for the first time since 1986-87 as Caltech defeated its most opponents ever at a SCIAC Championship meet.
