SCIAC Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference Announced
The 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards were announced Wednesday, following a vote conducted by the league's head coaches during the final day of the conference championships.
The 2019 SCIAC Athlete of the Year was earned by California Lutheran's sophomore Andreas Nybo. Nybo helped the Kingsmen to a fourth place finish in the team standings following the 2019 SCIAC Championships with 478.50 total points. Nybo opened the meet by swimming the anchor leg on Cal Lutheran's third place 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished with a time of 6:49.36. On day two, he set a new meet record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:49.43 and then placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.15 on day three. He then rounded out his stellar championships performance with a win in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking a time of 1:47.85.
Pomona-Pitzer first-year Jason Lu was tabbed the 2019 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year after he helped the Sagehens register their second straight conference championship with 1125.50 points. Lu powered to the silver in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:50.73 on day two of the SCIAC Championships, and then took gold in the 400-yard IM in a time of 3:56.53 on day three. On the final day of the event, the first-year notched a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.56.
Pomona-Pitzer head coach JP Gowdy and his Sagehens staff were voted the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. Gowdy helped Pomona-Pitzer clinch the SCIAC title on both the men's and women's side for the second straight year, and the men's team logged 1125.50 points - 141 points ahead of second place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS).
