SCIAC Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference Honors Announced
The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Confernce (SCIAC) announced the 2018 Men's Swimming & Diving All Conference awards as the leagues nine head coaches voted upon the Athlete, Newcomer and Coach of the Year while the All-SCIAC recipients were based on performance at the SCIAC Championships.
Mark Hallman of Pomona-Pitzer was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year after capping a tremendous career with another outstanding set of performances at the 2018 SCIAC Championships. Hallman won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.20, the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.66), and was a part of the Sagehens' winning 400-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle, and 800-yard freestyle relay teams. Hallman set a new meet and SCIAC record in the 500-yard freestyle, and clocked a new meet record in the 200-yard freestyle. The senior also swam the anchor leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay team which set a new meet and SCIAC record of 3:16.53, while he partnered with his Pomona-Pitzer teammates to set new meet records in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.34), 400-yard freestyle relay (2:59.65) as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:40.53).
First-year standout Lukas Menkhoff was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year following an outstanding performance at his first SCIAC Championships. Menkhoff glided to a new meet and SCIAC record in the 100-yard breaststroke (53.70), while he set a new meet record in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 44.17. He was also crowned the conference champion in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 20.59. Menkhoff teammed with fellow Sagehens to set a new meet and SCIAC record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:29.49), while he was also a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay squads.
For the second year in a row, the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Caltech and head coach Paul Hughes. Hughes, in his second year with the program, led the Beavers to 420 points and a sixth place finish for a second year in a row on the men's side, just 27.50 points behind the fifth place team, and nearly 100 points ahead of the seventh place finisher.
