Ed Baldwin Award: Bridget Connor, Caltech
Bridget Connor of the California Institute of Technology epitomizes hard work. As a freshman she started every game but the following year lost that starting spot to an incoming freshman. Because of this spent hours in the gym, shooting, despite a heavy research load in her lab and a nearly perfect GPA. In her 64 conference games, she had to wait until game 63 and 64 to achieve a win. Connor led her team by example, with heart, and displayed outstanding drive and competitive edge. For these reasons Bridget Connor has been a honored as the Ed Baldwin Sportsmanship Award recipient.
SCIAC Coach of the Year: Kristen Dowling, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
SCIAC Coach of the Year honors go to Kristen Dowling, head women's basketball coach for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In her three seasons at the helm of the program, Dowling has coached the Athenas to two consecutive regular season titles amassing a perfect 16-0 record this season. In SCIAC women's basketball history, an undefeated conference season has been accomplished just eight times and not since the 1989-90 season. With this the eighth regular season title in program history the team won their second consecutive Postseason Tournament title earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Dowling spent the 2010-12 seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach at Pepperdine University. In her last season with the Waves she helped the team to an 18-12 finish and a spot in the postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. It was her second time on the Waves coaching staff. From 2006-08, during her first stint, Dowling was a fulltime graduate assistant for Pepperdine. She spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at CSU Bakersfield before being asked to return to Pepperdine as an assistant in June 2010.
Dowling played collegiately at the University of Redlands, where she led the Bulldogs to their second-ever Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2004, and helped the university win a Women's Basketball Coaches Association Class Act Achievement Award. Dowling graduated Phi Beta Kappa, earning her bachelor's degree in Spanish, with a minor in physical education. She went on to earn her master's in educational technology at Pepperdine, and is a graduate of Nike's "So You Want to Be a Coach" program, as well as the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy.
