2015 SCIAC Champions and All-Conference Team Honors
2015 SCIAC Champions and All-Conference Team Honors
The 2015 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships came to a
close as it has in the last several years, with the teams from
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking team championship titles on both
sides.
The Athenas won top team honors for the
13th consecutive year and 18th time
overall. CMS' senior class capped off an unprecedented four-year
run on Sunday, winning their eighth SCIAC championship (4
men/4 women). The Class of 2015 for CMS went 62-0 in SCIAC
dual-meets and won the conference championship each year, something
that no other SCIAC swim & dive program has ever done for both
the women and men during the same four-year period.
Behind CMS (1153) on the women's side was Pomona-Pitzer (1085),
Redlands (709), Whittier (396), Occidental (391), La Verne (370),
Chapman (315), Cal Lutheran (151) and Caltech (89).
University of La Verne senior Maddie Lovrensky ended her SCIAC
career undefeated in all backstroke events in which she's competed.
Lovrensky completed her four-year career sweep with a dominant win
in the 200 yard backstroke at the 2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving
Championships and was named the Female Athlete of the Year for the
second year in a row.
The 200 backstroke was a typical Lovrensky performance. After
three relays and two championships races in the first three days of
the competition, the senior All-American dug deep to get out to a
big lead in the first 100 and cruised to an easy win for her third
gold of the championships. She also won the 50 freestyle on Friday
and defended the 100 backstroke title last night. Lovrensky will
now turn her attention to the 2015 NCAA National Championships
where she will look to add to her already massive legacy.
Freshman Kelsey
Thomas (1650 free) earned
individual SCIAC titles to help the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer
finish a close second to CMS. Thomas, who also won the
500-yard freestyle on Friday and was part of a winning
800-yard freestyle relay, was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year
after the meet.
Thomas started the day off with a comfortable win by over 11
seconds in the 1650, touching the wall in 17:13.64 to break her own
school record and failling just .06 behind the SCIAC Championships
record set last year. She also narrowly missed the school record in
the 500 on Friday, finishing in 5:00.00 even, just .09 off the
Pomona-Pitzer mark.
SCIAC Coach of the Year J.P. Gowdy is entering his fourth
season as the head coach of the Pomona-Pitzer Swimming and Diving
Programs.
In his first three seasons, Gowdy has directed the Pomona-Pitzer
Women's Swimming and Diving team to three second-place finishes in
the SCIAC, and the Men's Swimming and Diving team to a pair of
third-place finishes and a second-place finish in 2014, the highest
finish for the program since 1999.
In his brief tenure, Gowdy has been at the helm to see 21
school swimming records broken (out of a possible 38), including
nine of the 10 relay records. He coached the Pomona-Pitzer Women's
800 freestyle relay team to an NCAA Qualification in 2014, where
the foursome earned honorable mention All-America honors in both
the 400 and 800 relays with new school marks. In addition to
his responsibilities as the head coach, Gowdy served as the
Aquatics Director, overseeing every aspect of the aquatic
center.
Coach Gowdy is a 1999 graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont,
where he was a two-time MVP of the New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC), a 17-time All-American, and a
National Champion in the 400 IM.
At the conclusion of the meet the three top performers in each
event are recognized with All-Conference Team honors.
