2015 SCIAC Champions and All-Conference Team Honors

PASADENA, Calif - The 2015 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships came to a close as it has in the last several years, with the teams from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking team championship titles on both sides.

The Stags clinched their eighth-straight title and 36th time in program history. CMS' senior class capped off an unprecedented four-year run on Sunday, winning their eighth SCIAC championship (4 men/4 women). The Class of 2015 for CMS went 62-0 in SCIAC dual-meets and won the conference championship each year, something that no other SCIAC swim & dive program has ever done for both the women and men during the same four-year period.

The CMS (1148.5) men's team was followed by Pomona-Pitzer (824), Redlands (575), Cal Lutheran (530), Occidental (456), Whittier (389.5), La Verne (298), Chapman (238) and Caltech (229).

Highlighting the final day, senior Jeff Depew was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Year by the conference coaches after an impressive four-year career with the Bulldogs. Depew capped off a fine career by winning the 200 Fly with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:47.58. The men's meet wrapped up with the always exciting 400 Free Relay, as the Bulldog quartet of Tyrrell, Depew, LoPrete, and Glendinning harnessed a third-place time of 3:04.47 to also exceed the NCAA B standard.

Freshman Mark Hallman took first place in the 100-yard freestyle on the final day of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Sunday, and earned the league's Newcomer of the Year honor, it was announced after the meet. Hallman finished first in both the 100 and 200 freestyle over the weekend, as well as a close second in the 500. He also anchored the 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the meet, and improved Pomona-Pitzer from fourth place to second over the final 100 yards.

CMS head coach Charlie Griffiths was named SCIAC Men's Coach of the Year for 2014-15 at the conclusion of the meet. Coach Griffiths, in his fourteenth season, has established CMS as one of the premier small-college programs in the Western United States. SCIAC results include 139 SCIAC individual titles, 101 SCIAC records broken, 81 SCIAC meet records set, 77 SCIAC relay titles, 52 SCIAC Athlete-of-the-Week Awards, 19 SCIAC team titles, 9 SCIAC Swimmer/Diver-of-the-Year Awards and a 171-11 SCIAC dual meet record. NCAA results include 56 swimmers earning 122 All-American or Honorable Mention All-American citations, 12 NCAA Top 15 team finishes and 5 NCAA individual titles. Overall results include a 193-54 dual meet record, varsity records set 175 times in 35 events and ASCA Awards for Excellence in 12 seasons. He is ASCA Level V (highest possible rating) certified.

As a swimmer at Denison University, Griffiths was one of the most improved athletes in program history. Among other awards and honors, he served as team captain his senior year and gathered seven All-NCAC citations and NCAA cuts in the 100 fly in 1994 and 1995.

In addition to his coaching duties, Griffiths is an Associate Professor of Physical Education at CMS.  In 2009, Coach Griffiths won the Glen R. Huntoon Award for Superior Teaching at Claremont McKenna College and was the first athletic department member to win the award since its inception in 1974.  Griffiths is the chair of the SCIAC swimming coaches committee and served for five years as the NCAA D-III men's representative to the board of directors of the College Swimming Coaches Association.

At the conclusion of the meet the three top performers in each event are recognized with All-Conference Team honors.
