2017 SCIAC Volleyball Athletes of the Week

Molly Holloway

Senior • Middle Blocker • Lakewood, California

 

Holloway floored 72 kills on 168 attempts with just 23 miscues to hit at an efficient, .292 over the Regals first nine matches. Averaging 2.32 kills per set, Holloway downed 13 kills in a tough, 3-2 loss to No. 10 Trinity (Texas), while adding seven kills in a five-set setback to No. 1 Calvin. Against the Knights, Holloway also served up three of her 11 aces during the nine-match stretch, and added four more in a 3-1 victory over Whitworth. The senior from Lakewood, Calif. was also stellar at the net, contributing 12 total blocks, including a solo and three assists in the Regals’ second loss to Trinity (Texas).

Johnson paced Chapman to a 2-0 week in SCIAC play which featured a 3-0 sweep of Whittier, and a 3-2 win over No. 17 Cal Lutheran. Johnson floored 25 kills on 67 swings with just just six mishits to post a stellar .284 hitting percentage. She averaged 3.13 kills per set, including 3.40 kills per frame in the Panthers’ impressive five-set victory over the Regals which resulted in 17 kills. She also collected 31 total digs including 17 against Cal Lutheran for a 3.88 digs per set average. The junior outside hitter also registered five service aces, two assists, and a solo block during the week.

Cooke led Chapman to a 3-0 week in SCIAC competition, including a hard-fought, 3-2 win over No. 7 CMS. Cooke paced the Panthers with 35 kills, averaging 3.50 kills per set as she registered a .360 hitting percentage for the week which also included 3-0 wins over Redlands and Caltech. Cooke floored 18 kills against the Athenas and hit .375 for the contest, adding six digs and assisting on five blocks in the five-set victory. Chapman remains the only unbeaten team in SCIAC play.

Senior • Outside Hitter • Hacienda Heights, California


Rojo helped La Verne pick up three SCIAC victories during the week including a 3-0 win over Chapman, as well as a 3-1 victory over Pomona-Pitzer, and a 3-0 sweep of Occidental. During the three-match stretch, Rojo floored 33 kills in 10 sets, collecting 3.30 kills per frame and hit .253 for the week. She also picked up 25 total digs, including an 11-dig effort to highlight a double-double output against the Sagehens. She averaged 2.50 digs per set for the week and added six service aces, including four against Pomona-Pitzer.

Thieme led Whittier to a 3-1 week, which included an upset win over No. 14 La Verne in five sets. Whittier then followed going 2-1 during the La Verne Invite which featured wins against Austin (3-1) and UC Santa Cruz (3-0). Thieme combined for 57 kills and 38 digs over the four-match stretch, and hit at an impressive .346 clip against the Leopards. Thieme floored 26 kills against La Verne and averaged 3.56 kills per set during the week. The junior from Corona, Calif. added 15 kills and 10 digs in a 3-1 setback to Scranton.

Sophomore • Setter • Moreno Valley, California


Purdom directed Whittier to a 3-0 week which featured league victories over Chapman (3-1), Pomona-Pitzer (3-1) and Occidental (3-2) as the Poets improved to 8-3 in SCIAC action. The sophomore setter dished out 95 assists during the three matches including a collegiate career-high 35 in a five-set win over the Tigers. In addition to averaging 7.31 helpers per set, Purdom notched 34 digs (2.62 per frame) and added 21 digs against Occidental. During the three-match stretch, Purdom registered at least 28 assists in each contest.
