November 27, 2006

The SCIAC Athletes of the Week have been named and the honorees are: Pomona Pitzer's Tim Brown (men's water polo) and Cal Lutheran's Jillian Friend (women's swimming).

Pomona Pitzer: Tim Brown, Water Polo
The senior water polo player was named to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship 1st Team this past weekend. Brown was the only member of the NCAA Division III to be named to the 1st team. Brown scored ! three g oals and drew three ejections against the Bulldogs. In the tournament, the Sagehens improved upon their 7 seed, finishing 6th overall, and pushed runner-up LMU to the brink, falling 5-4.

Cal Lutheran: Jillian Friend, Swimming
Jillian Friend, a CLU freshman, has had two career weeks in a row for the Regals. This weekend at the Speedo Cup Friend swam the 400 IM in a lifetime best and school record time of 4:45.94 in the preliminaries to advance to finals. This time broke her own record (4:48.34) that she set on Nov. 4 at the Pomona Invitational. Friend broke the prior CLU record by nearly 11 seconds. She was the first female swimmer from CLU to advance to an individual final at the Speedo Cup, a meet attended by numerous Division I schools including USC, UC Irvine, Stanford, Brigham Young and others. Friend finished 32nd in the finals.
