Leopards Fall To Panthers In Overtime

Chapman University rallied from 18 points down in the second half to force overtime against the University of La Verne and continued its momentum in the extra session to defeat the Leopards 108-97 in NCAA Division III First Round action at the Hutton Center in Orange.

The Panthers began the overtime with a 7-0 run and made 19 of its 21 free throws (90.5%) in OT as four ULV starters fouled out in the final five minutes.

The SCIAC Champion Leopards conclude their season at 19-7.

ULV controlled much of the opening frame without forward Trenecca Jones, who picked up two fouls in the opening five minutes, for much of the first half. Paced by Marissa Raya's 15 points, the Leopards led by as many as 15 before taking a 41-34 advantage into the locker room.

La Verne continued its hot hand through much of the second half and held an 18-point advantage with 6:24 remaining before the Panthers went on a furious rally led by point guard Lauren Kamiyaka, who drained three three-point baskets in the final three minutes. Kamiyaka, who finished with a game-high 34 points, also went 17-of-18 from the free throw line. Amelia Perez contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers, who advance to take on Howard Payne University on March 3.

Emily Carrillo closed out her freshman campaign on a high note with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Charleen Guerrero finished with a team-high 21 points. Jones, despite being plaque by foul trouble throughout the contest, managed to record her 16th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Raya finished with 18 points with Lindsey Shiomi collecting 10 points in the defeat.
