La Verne, CMS Win on Day 1 of SCIAC Softball Tournament

La Verne, CA - The No. 1 seeded University of La Verne defeated No. 4 Chapman 5-0 and No. 2 CMS defeated No. 3 Whittier 6-2 on day one of the 2017 SCIAC Softball Tournament.

Due to weather, game times for day two of the double elimination tournament at La Verne have been moved. Whittier will face Chapman in a loser out game at 9:30 a.m. and La Verne will play CMS at noon. The winner of the first game and loser of the second game will meet in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.  

La Verne’s Hayley Jaquess (11-5) pitched a complete game shutout against the Panthers, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Centerfielder Carly Condon had two hits and two RBI in the game. Chapman’s Sarah Hartmann (5-4) pitched the complete game taking the loss. She allowed just two earned runs on nine hits.

Whittier and CMS were tied at 2-2 after the first inning, but the Athenas scored twice in the second and two more in the fifth for the 6-2 victory. Anna Gurr earned the complete game victory for CMS improving to 15-6 on the year with eight strikeouts. Ande Troutman had two home runs to help the offense.
