The SCIAC Athletes of the Week have been named and the honorees
are: CMS' Ryan Martin (men's track & field) and La Verne's
Kelly Silagyi (softball).
CMS: Ryan Martin, Men's Track & Field
The sophomore from Redondo Beach broke the CMS record in the 400
meters by 1.10 seconds with a time 46.95 at the Occidental
Invitational. This was a personal best by 1.3 seconds, is currently
second in the nation and is the fastest time run by a SCIAC athlete
in 35 years. He is only the 17th person to break 47.00 in the 400
in the 32-year history of Division III. He also doubled back to run
21.84 in the 200. Martin is t! he 2006 SCIAC Champion in both the
400 and 200.
La Verne: Kelly Silagyi, Softball
A senior from Chino, Silagyi capped her career by hitting .555
(11-20) with two home runs and eight RBIs at the NCAA West
Regionals as the Leopards advanced to the championship game.
Silagyi hit the game-winning home run in a 4-1 victory over
top-seeded Chapman University on Thursday. She followed that
performance by going 5-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and two
runs scored in a 8-5 win over Redlands in extra innings on
Saturday. She also belted a three-run homer in Sunday's 12-9 defeat
to Linfield. The 2006 SCIAC Player of the Year and All-West Region
selection, Silagyi paced the conference in home runs (14, ULV
school record), hits (73), RBIs (63) and doubles (18).
