Congratulations to Occidental's Kevin Chaves and Whittier's Josh Scurlock for being named the SCIAC Athletes of the Week!

OXY: Kevin Chaves, Cross Country
Senior Kevin Chaves was named the Division III West Region Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after winning the West Regional meet with an 8K course time of 24:34.85. Chaves led the Tigers to a second place finish and a bid to the NCAA National Championships next weekend in Minnesota. Chaves was also named SCIAC Athlete of the Year after placing first at the SCIAC Championship meet on Oct. 27. Oxy Head Coach Rob Bartlett was named the USTFCCCA Coach of the Year as well.

Scurlock finished with 443 yards on 25-of-40 passing with seven touchdowns and two interceptions in the Poets 67-61 upset victory over Occidental College on November 11.  He set Whittier College single-game records with the seven touchdown passes and 443 passing yards.  He also rushed for 105 yards and another score.  He finishes 2007 with a single-season record 2,650 yards of total offense.  He was just two completions short of setting the record for completions in a season and three touchdown passes short of the season record.  He leaves Whittier with career passing records in yards (6,439) and touchdowns (50).
