ROB BARTLETT NAMED TRACK COACH AT OCCIDENTAL
July 5, 2007

Rob Bartlett has been named head track and field and cross country coach at Occidental College, following a year as interim coach in which the men's cross country team went to the national championships and the track team produced two All-Americans.

"After a national search that included almost 80 candidates, we realized that we had, right here, the person with the qualities we had been searching for," said Athletic Director Dixon Farmer '63. "He is the right man for the job, and I am very pleased that he will lead Oxy track and cross country into the future."

A native of England and a graduate of the University of East Anglia, Bartlett competed in the national championships in the 200m and 400m at both the junior national and collegiate levels. He first came to Occidental as an exchange student in 2002-03, where he ran in the 200m, 400m and relay events, earning All-Conference recognition in all four events.

He returned to Occidental as an assistant track and cross country coach in 2005, and was named to the interim position in November 2006, following the departure of Troy Engle, who resigned to become associate head coach of the U.S. Paralympic Track & Field team in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"It's an honor to coach a program with such a long and distinguished history of producing outstanding athletes," said Bartlett, who becomes the 21st head coach in the 112-year history of the college's track and field program. "Occidental's track and field hall of fame is chockablock with All-Americans, national record holders, and Olympic athletes."

During his short tenure at Occidental, Bartlett helped coach the nationally ranked men's cross country team to its first conference title in 11 years and to the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championships. With the men's and women track teams this spring, he coached four conference champions, two school record holders in the pole vault and steeplechase, and two All-Americans.

"Rob has the respect and appreciation of both the cross country and track teams, and did a sensational job of keeping the track team focused as the season unfolded," Farmer said. "Looking ahead, the recruiting class that will arrive this fall is as good or better than it has been in several years. We all are looking forward to this coming year."
